SPY: The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG scooped in bird's eye view

Approximately half a year after the introduction of the new GL-Class in mid-summer 2012, Mercedes-Benz will also release the potent GL 63 AMG version, the first generation of its kind since the large SUV was first revealed back in 2006.

From the spy shots we've seen so far, the muscular GL bred in the Affalterbach labs promises to be a looker in its class. But the appealing, beefy stance becomes the least important after you find out the future GL 63 AMG will benefit from the addition of a specially modified chassis with a new suspension/dampers system, which certainly ensures a drastically improved agility and unbeatable dynamics compared to other similar vehicles. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive powertrain will be retained, but will also be further tweaked by AMG engineers for a more RWD-oriented feeling and added on-road performance. The extensive technical package will also include the AMG DRIVE UNIT, which lets the driver visualize and change the SUV's set-up. To harmoniously complete the new GL 63 AMG, engineers will fit the car with the company's newest 5.5-litre, twin-turbo V8 powerplant in its best specification: 544 hp/800 Nm in basic version and 571 hp/900 Nm with the Performance Package installed.
